April showers bring May flowers with lots of sun. We still bundle up in our coats but our lovely sun is getting ready to hug us with it’s warm rays. Are you ready for summer? When shopping, you will see that the shelves are already stocked with everything a trip to the beach requires, including kid’s sunscreen. As a parent, we have to protect our children from the sun, but also from the dangerous chemicals that often come in these sunscreens.

Do you read labels? If not, now is a great time to start reading what’s actually in the sunscreen. Don’t make your sunscreen choice by just relying on familiar brands, get knowledgeable about ingredients that are safe and those that aren’t so safe. ingredients. Use your smartphone to Google all those those crazy looking words while shopping.

Shop for sunscreens that have active ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, Mexoryl XS or avobenzone (3%).  Choose an  SPF between 15-50 depending on your skin tone, and choose water resistant lotions.

Is your sunscreen safe?

I would suggest avoiding sunscreens with high SPF’s and avoid ingredients like vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), oxybenzone, Benzophenone, Homosalate, parabens.

Last year I started using Honest brand sunscreen for my kids and was very happy with the results. No burn, no bad chemicals!

It’s important to remember that we should protect our friends in the ocean as well. By using natural products, we keep our marine water and corals safe. It is not only about you or your children!  It’s about the whole world!

I hope you enjoy a very happy and safe summertime with your family!
