Being a mom is HARD work and sometimes between diapers, carpools, parenting books, bake sales, swaddle techniques…well, we forget that we are WOMEN too! I decided I had been using the same worn out products too long; Bonnie Bell anyone? I’m joking, but really I have been so knee-deep in the aforementioned things that I had no idea what was going on in the world of makeup or skincare.

Enter: monthly boxes. Have you heard of these? I hadn’t but was tickled to find that I could sign up and receive a box each month with samples and sometimes full-sized products to try – like a mini Christmas once a month. (Incidentally there are so many different boxes that you can even sign your dog up to receive one per month. Puppy samples galore!) I didn’t know what to expect but thought I’d give it a whirl because I wanted to find out what was new and good! CC cream – yep, that’s like a KitchenAid Mixer or Leatherman for your face; it promises to do everything short of fold your laundry. Hair protector – yep, keeps those damaging UV rays from cramping your style.

So I decided to pick 2 boxes and see how I like them. I asked a few people and really just randomly picked Birchbox and Ipsy because I didn’t (still don’t) know about a lot of different ones. At $10/month I figured I could have some fun, discover some new products, and learn a few things.

Here is what came in my Birchbox this month:

Dr. Jart+ Premium BB Cream SPF 45+:

BB Cream is the cousin of CC Creams (KitchenAid Mixer mentioned above) with similar promises. I have been using this in place of foundation and must admit it blends in and matches my skin tone really well. As far as the SPF, I couldn’t tell it was there and I was quite rosy after being outside.

Jasmine Seven Fresh Feet Wipes:

I thought the perfect opportunity to use these wipes was post-beach to get that grubby feeling off my feet. It did get the grubby feeling off, but replaced it with absolute sliminess! Eeeew! And what’s worse, the sliminess didn’t wear off for hours!

ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick:

This looks like it is a bold red color, but in actuality it is pinkish and not a good color at all (at least for me). Rave compliments for the appley scent, however. Made me really want to like this lipstick!

Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect:

Love this! It smells amazing and works really well! Seems to leave my hair less frizzy and soft. I would definitely buy this!

Yes To Cucumber Towelettes:

I like this brand a lot (and own other products of theirs), but didn’t care for these towelettes. They stung my face even though they were supposed to have “soothing cucumber” (and I don’t have particularly sensitive skin). After using these I was dying to splash cold water on my face, which totally defeats the purpose of easy-to-use and bring-with-you towelettes.

The Takeaway…

I’m definitely pleased with what came in my little $10 investment and I am seriously considering buying one of the these items on an ongoing basis. I still feel like I have a lot to learn on the beauty front, but I’m excited about the road ahead. Can’t wait to see what next month’s Birchbox brings! Stay tuned!
